Madagascar
My cry sounds like those of the phantoms called “lemures” in Latin, hence my name!
I can weigh 30 grams to almost 10 kilograms: varied, my family certainly is! We are all primates and endemic to the island of Madagascar, East of Africa. The word “endemic” means that we can be found nowhere else on Earth, we truly are unique!
Depending on the species our diet can vary but we generally feed on vegetation, insects or fruits.
The ring-tailed lemur is surely our most famous representative. With its black and white stripped tail, and the way it comically bounds across, it is the star of zoos the world over.
Like all lemurs however, it is dangerously threatened. In Madagascar deforestation is a big problem, and areas where wild animals can live are becoming rare. Inversely, by protecting the forests of Madagascar, it is possible to save hundreds of species of extraordinary animals!
