In the Kongo language chimpanzee means “fake man”, that’s how similar we are to you, humans! You and I share 98.8% of our genetic characteristics, and thus belong to the same family, the hominids. As illustrious cousins we are often studied, and scientists still marvel at our use of tools and elaborate social behaviours. Still, I must admit I am very disappointed: our kinship doesn’t prevent you from destroying my habitat (the forest) or hunting me for food! Where I live in Africa, in Uganda for example, there exists several programs to help my species. So, dear cousin, protect me!
