To lure a mate, the male displays his fantastic feathers.
They call us the Dragonbird ! We are a type of pheasant, but as with my cousin the Indian Peafowl the main feature of my species is, of course, the huge colourful tail (known as a “train”) our males can deploy to seduce females. We may not look like it, but we can still fly and although we nest on the forest floor, families are often found perched 10 - 15m up.
We live in Southeast Asia. We are the national bird of Myanmar, and used to be a royal symbol for Burma’s monarchs. However due to hunting and poaching for our feathers, as well as a reduction in extent and quality of our habitat (we like forests, but need to be away from people and near water), our population has declined rapidly and we are now considered an endangered species.
MY SCIENTIFIC NAME Pavo muticus | MY CLASS Birds | WHERE DO I LIVE? Southeast Asia | MY HABITAT mainly forests | MY SIZE 100 - 300 cm |
MY WEIGHT 1 - 5 kg | MY LIFE SPAN 15 years | MY FAMILY 3 - 6 eggs per litter | WHAT DO I EAT? everything! | MY CONSERVATION STATUS Endangered |
