Open water and coasts
When you see me lying on the sand, sometimes weighing up to 150 kilograms, you’ll find it hard to imagine I am the fastest of the sea turtles! I spend however most of my time in the sea, in the shallow waters where the vegetation on which I feed.
I can swim vast distances through oceans, to return to the beach where I was born and lay my down eggs. My eggs, laid and buried in the sand, will all hatch together. Hundreds of small turtles will try to reach the ocean as fast as possible, while being preyed upon by birds, dogs and crabs. Once in the water, they’ll still have to avoid fish and octopi waiting for them there! Hard to get through childhood! Once an adult, I don’t really have any natural predator, but I can accidentally be caught in fishing nets. I also suffer enormously from ocean pollution.
