I may look like I’m always smiling, but I really don’t feel like smiling. Sadly I am famous amongst people fighting to protect nature for being one of the 10 most threatened species on the planet. 

I belong to the Pinnipedia family, which also comprises many other types of seals as well as walruses and sea lions. We all have similar diets: fish, crustaceans and even algae. But unlike most others who can be found in cold waters, I prefer the warm Mediterranean Sea. 

Let’s get back to the problems I am facing, as they are many. My first worry is ignorance from some fishermen, who kill me thinking I am a competitor. However there are so few of us, roughly 600, that we eat nothing in comparison with how much men can fish! Overfishing is indeed a bane for all marine animals… Sea pollution represents another threat. It makes me sick and vulnerable to illnesses. The Mediterranean Sea is the most polluted sea in the world! There is also the ever increasing numbers of tourists on beaches, where I used to go to have my babies. I am being pushed out of my natural habitat: I am struggling to find secure nursery areas. 

In short, I am in dire need of a helping hand from humans. I’m sure we can find a way to cohabit, but don’t leave it too late!
