Northern Asia and North America
My name comes from the Native American xalibu which means “one who uses its hooves like a spade”. Indeed in the winter, I dig in the snow with my legs to get to the food beneath, as I am an herbivore. Speaking about names, did you know I have another one: reindeer ! Indeed we belong to the same species, the only difference being reindeer are caribous which humans have domesticated.
I live in the arctic or subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and America.
To find food throughout the year I can travel several thousand kilometres, in what is called a migration. Monarch butterflies, African gnu and swallows are other examples of migratory animals.
As I need vast territories, I am very sensitive to consequences of human activity such as deforestation and mining exploitation.
