South America
I am the female of the red deer, who lives in the forests of Europe. My species is herbivorous and we belong to the Cervidae family. We are bigger than roe deer, who are another species of Cervidae you can sometimes spot in fields or at the edge of the forest.
The red deer male grows antlers every summer and loses them for the winter. They are used during mating season in the autumn, when males roar a cry we call “bell” to let females know they are here, and challenge other males entering their territory. Fights sometimes leave both males with their antlers tangled!
The baby of the red deer is a calf, has red fur with white spots to help stay camouflaged in the foliage.
We are numerous, and our impressive size and awesome antlers makes us a target of choice for hunters. If you want to catch a sight of me, better come look for me in the spring or summer, when the hunting season is off!
