I am hard to miss! I am the biggest land mammal and can weigh up to 8 tonnes, the equivalent of 6 cars ! I am an herbivore: I feed on vegetation and fruits by picking them with my trunk and bringing them to my mouth.

I live in the African savanna but I have an African cousin who lives in the forests. We are both bigger than the Asian elephant and have bigger ears and longer tusks.

I have long been hunted for the latter, and although I am now protected some continue to hunt illegally, making my species more vulnerable.
